Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the intersection of Islamic teachings and local wisdom in fostering community empowerment, particularly in the context of rural and semi-urban areas in Indonesia. It highlights how integrating Islamic principles with local cultural practices can enhance sustainable development initiatives. Theoretical framework: The analysis is grounded in the theory of social capital, which emphasizes the role of networks, trust, and shared values in community development. The study also incorporates the concept of "empowerment" from an Islamic perspective and indigenous knowledge systems. Literature review: Previous studies have shown the efficacy of blending religious values and local knowledge in community empowerment. However, there is a gap in examining how Islamic principles can coexist with local traditions in empowering marginalized groups. Methods: This qualitative study adopts a case study approach, drawing on interviews, participatory observation, and literature review of Islamic teachings and local wisdom from several Indonesian villages. Results: The findings indicate that local wisdom, such as cooperation (gotong royong) and Islamic teachings like zakat and waqf, contribute significantly to community empowerment. These practices promote social cohesion and collective action in rural areas. Implications: The integration of Islam and local wisdom can serve as a powerful tool for community-driven development, bridging modernity with traditional values. Policy implications suggest the need for inclusive development models that respect and leverage local cultural contexts. Novelty: This study contributes a novel framework for understanding the synergy between Islamic teachings and local wisdom in community empowerment. It offers new insights into culturally appropriate approaches to development that align with both religious and traditional values.
