Student Development and Islamic Studies Teaching Using the Tahlili and Maudhui Approaches in Islamic Boarding Schools and Universities

Objective: This study evaluates the impact of a training program that enhances students' understanding of the Quran through Tafsir Tahlili (analytical) and Tafsir Maudhui (thematic) methods, focusing on their application to contemporary social issues like interfaith relations, community development, and economic inequality. Theoretical framework: The study draws on Islamic exegesis (Tafsir), specifically Tafsir Tahlili and Tafsir Maudhui, which help interpret Quranic verses and broader themes. The framework connects these methods to modern societal challenges, aiming to equip students with tools to address them while staying rooted in Islamic principles. Literature review: Existing research highlights the role of Tafsir methods in improving Quranic comprehension and critical thinking. Studies emphasize the value of practical learning, including case studies and role-playing, to apply Quranic teachings to real-world issues, such as economic inequality and interfaith relations. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, involving pre- and post-program surveys, case studies, and role-playing exercises. The program was implemented at Pesantren and Islamic higher education institutions, with data collected from both surveys and interviews to assess students' comprehension and confidence. Results: The program led to significant improvements in students’ understanding of the Quran. Participants showed increased confidence in applying Tafsir methods and using Quranic principles to address contemporary issues. Many expressed a desire to continue their studies and engage in community-based work, indicating intellectual and professional growth. Implications: The study highlights the value of integrating Tafsir Tahlili and Tafsir Maudhui into Islamic education to help students engage with modern issues while adhering to Islamic principles. Practical learning techniques proved effective in enhancing comprehension and critical thinking. Novelty: This study combines Tafsir Tahlili and Tafsir Maudhui in a practical training program that addresses contemporary social challenges, offering a new approach to Quranic education. It provides fresh insights into applying Islamic teachings to modern societal issues.
